Tajikistan (X tons) was the main destination for maize exports from China, with a 56% share of total exports. Moreover, maize exports to Tajikistan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Vietnam (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Angola (X tons), with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Tajikistan totaled +1,735.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+12.7% per year) and Angola (+91.8% per year).
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the key foreign market for maize exports from China, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Tajikistan, with a 5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Vietnam stood at +17.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Angola (+96.1% per year) and Tajikistan (+10.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average maize export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 58% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 351%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+101.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into China
In 2022, supplies from abroad of maize increased by 9.5% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 627%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, maize imports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 223%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest maize supplier to China, accounting for a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, maize imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Ukraine (X tons), threefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United States stood at +8.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ukraine (+129.4% per year) and Myanmar (+11.2% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of maize to China, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ukraine ($X), with a 23% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States amounted to +12.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ukraine (+63.2% per year) and Myanmar (-2.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average maize import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -19.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, posted a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 213%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
