Marble And Travertine Market Size in China
In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in the Chinese marble and travertine market, when its value decreased by -1.5% to $X. In general, the total consumption indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -8.8% against 2016 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.
Marble And Travertine Production in China
In value terms, marble and travertine production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 123%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports from China
In 2021, shipments abroad of marble and travertine increased by 31% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 59%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, marble and travertine exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +50.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 96%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), India (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of marble and travertine exports from China, with a combined 85% share of total exports. Pakistan, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand, Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Pakistan (with a CAGR of +99.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, India ($X) remains the key foreign market for marble and travertine exports from China, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to India totaled +35.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+0.5% per year) and Italy (+11.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average marble and travertine export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 8.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +11.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, marble and travertine export price increased by +49.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 64% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+13.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Marble And Travertine Imports
Imports into China
After three years of decline, purchases abroad of marble and travertine increased by 23% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 83% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, marble and travertine imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest marble and travertine supplier to China, with a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, marble and travertine imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Iran (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Italy (X tons), with an 8.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Turkey totaled -1.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Iran (-0.2% per year) and Italy (+0.8% per year).
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constituted the largest supplier of marble and travertine to China, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Iran, with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Turkey stood at +1.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+7.2% per year) and Iran (+3.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average marble and travertine import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 38%. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+8.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
