The Chinese millet market expanded sharply to $X in 2022, growing by 5.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate buoyant growth. Millet consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Millet Production in China
In value terms, millet production expanded rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 415% against the previous year. Millet production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
The average yield of millet in China expanded to X tons per ha in 2022, surging by 1.6% against 2021. In general, the yield indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, millet yield decreased by -1.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the yield increased by 80% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average millet yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The millet harvested area in China totaled X ha in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to millet production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from China
For the third consecutive year, China recorded decline in overseas shipments of millet, which decreased by -15% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, millet exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Indonesia (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the main destinations of millet exports from China, together accounting for 56% of total exports. Germany, Vietnam, the Netherlands, Italy, France, the UK and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +10.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, Germany ($X), South Korea ($X) and Japan ($X) were the largest markets for millet exported from China worldwide, with a combined 54% share of total exports. Indonesia, the Netherlands, Italy, Vietnam, France, the UK and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +11.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average millet export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -5.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 51%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+14.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Millet Imports
Imports into China
In 2022, the amount of millet imported into China surged to X tons, with an increase of 115% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 312%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, millet imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 321% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Ukraine (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of millet to China, with a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, millet imports from Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Myanmar (X tons), fourfold. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Ukraine amounted to +153.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Myanmar (+37.1% per year) and Kazakhstan (+256.7% per year).
In value terms, Ukraine ($X) constituted the largest supplier of millet to China, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Myanmar ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Ukraine stood at +175.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Myanmar (+30.5% per year) and Kazakhstan (+463.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average millet import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 8.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 23%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+58.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
