In 2021, overseas shipments of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, molluscs exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 26%. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The Philippines (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the main destinations of molluscs exports from China, together comprising 37% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +32.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Philippines ($X), Thailand ($X) and South Korea ($X) were the largest markets for molluscs exported from China worldwide, with a combined 41% share of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +32.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average molluscs export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into China
In 2021, molluscs imports into China surged to X tons, rising by 55% on the year before. Over the period under review, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +97.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 62%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, molluscs imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a strong increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Indonesia (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Peru (X tons) were the main suppliers of molluscs imports to China, with a combined 48% share of total imports. The United States, Argentina, Malaysia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Vietnam, Russia and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +51.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest molluscs suppliers to China were Indonesia ($X), Japan ($X) and Peru ($X), with a combined 48% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the United States, New Zealand, Argentina, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, Vietnam, Russia and South Korea, which together accounted for a further 34%.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +39.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average molluscs import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -4.2% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, molluscs import price decreased by -19.3% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while the price for Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
