Non-Wheat Flour Market Size in China

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was decline in the Chinese non-wheat flour market, when its value decreased by -0.6% to $X. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Non-Wheat Flour Production in China

In value terms, non-wheat flour production contracted modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Non-wheat flour production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports from China

Non-wheat flour exports from China contracted to X tons in 2021, almost unchanged from the year before. In general, total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -8.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 65% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-wheat flour exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

South Korea (X tons), Australia (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the main destinations of non-wheat flour exports from China, with a combined 86% share of total exports. New Zealand, Hong Kong SAR and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Hong Kong SAR (with a CAGR of +87.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Korea ($X), Australia ($X) and Japan ($X) were the largest markets for non-wheat flour exported from China worldwide, with a combined 83% share of total exports. These countries were followed by New Zealand, Hong Kong SAR and the United States, which together accounted for a further 14%.

Among the main countries of destination, Hong Kong SAR, with a CAGR of +92.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average non-wheat flour export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, non-wheat flour export price increased by +52.5% against 2019 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, approx. X tons of non-wheat flours were imported into China; with an increase of 25% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -4.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 26%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-wheat flour imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Thailand (X tons) was the main non-wheat flour supplier to China, with a 93% share of total imports. Moreover, non-wheat flour imports from Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Mexico (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Thailand stood at +6.9%.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of non-wheat flours to China, comprising 96% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($X), with a 3.1% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

The average non-wheat flour import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 3.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 16%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for Mexico amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (-0.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
