Dry Peas Market Size in China
The Chinese dry peas market reduced to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -3.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine-year period. From 2018 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
The average yield of peas (dry) in China fell to X tons per ha in 2021, approximately reflecting 2020 figures. Overall, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the yield increased by 6.9% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the average dry peas yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Exports from China
In 2021, the amount of peas (dry) exported from China skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 223% against 2020. In general, exports saw a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 444%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, dry peas exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw pronounced growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 105%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) was the main destination for dry peas exports from China, with a 62% share of total exports. Moreover, dry peas exports to Taiwan (Chinese) exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Vietnam (X tons), fourfold. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Taiwan (Chinese) amounted to +36.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+35.6% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+20.3% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for dry peas exported from China were Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Japan ($X), with a combined 81% share of total exports. South Korea, Mauritius, Hong Kong SAR, Thailand and Pakistan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.
Mauritius, with a CAGR of +52.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average dry peas export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -56.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 243% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Pakistan (+48.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Dry Peas Imports
Imports into China
In 2021, approx. X tons of peas (dry) were imported into China; falling by -24.4% on the year before. Overall, imports, however, recorded prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 95%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, dry peas imports dropped to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Canada (X tons) was the main dry peas supplier to China, with a 92% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States (X tons), with a 2.9% share of total imports. The third position in this ranking was taken by Australia (X tons), with a 2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Canada stood at +13.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+12.5% per year) and Australia (+33.0% per year).
In value terms, Canada ($X) constituted the largest supplier of dry peas to China, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 3% share of total imports. It was followed by Australia, with a 2.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Canada totaled +10.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+8.3% per year) and Australia (+28.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average dry peas import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 46%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices from France ($X per ton) and Australia ($X per ton), while the price for Canada ($X per ton) and the United States ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
