Persimmon Market Size in China

After two years of growth, the Chinese persimmon market decreased by -2% to $X in 2021. Overall, the total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +100.1% against 2012 indices. Persimmon consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Persimmon Production in China

In value terms, persimmon production fell modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, persimmon exports fell significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 101% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2020, and then fell sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

Vietnam (X tons) was the main destination for persimmon exports from China, with a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, persimmon exports to Vietnam exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Thailand (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), with a 4.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Vietnam amounted to +16.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+11.8% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+8.8% per year).

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the key foreign market for persimmon exports from China, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Vietnam amounted to +25.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+9.0% per year) and Malaysia (+21.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average persimmon export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -28.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 33%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped notably in the following year.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+8.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into China

Persimmon imports into China shrank slightly to X tons in 2021, waning by -2.3% compared with 2020. Overall, imports showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 203% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, persimmon imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, New Zealand (X tons) was the main supplier of persimmon to China, with a 98% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X kg), with a 1.5% share of total imports.
