Pistachio Market Size in China

The Chinese pistachio market fell notably to $X in 2022, which is down by -40.7% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded resilient growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Pistachio Production in China

In value terms, pistachio production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 90% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the average yield of pistachios in China contracted to X tons per ha, standing approx. at the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the yield increased by 3.3%. The pistachio yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of pistachios production in China reduced slightly to X ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 7.2%. The pistachio harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from China

After three years of decline, overseas shipments of pistachios increased by 62% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 85% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pistachio exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Australia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the main destinations of pistachio exports from China, together accounting for 25% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Japan, Nepal, Thailand, France, Indonesia and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Japan (with a CAGR of +142.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for pistachio exported from China were Australia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 30% share of total exports. Singapore, Japan, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Thailand, Nepal, France, the United States, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.

Among the main countries of destination, Japan, with a CAGR of +165.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average pistachio export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pistachio export price increased by +40.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 83%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nepal (+34.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into China

In 2022, approx. X tons of pistachios were imported into China; waning by -64.8% on the year before. In general, imports, however, posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 140%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, pistachio imports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 129%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of pistachio to China, accounting for a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, pistachio imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Iran (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United States amounted to +4.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Iran (+6.6% per year) and Australia (+15.7% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pistachios to China, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Iran ($X), with a 23% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the United States amounted to +8.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Iran (+7.3% per year) and Australia (+23.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average pistachio import price amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pistachio import price increased by +5.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 40%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
