Plastic Household Ware Market Size in China

After three years of growth, the Chinese plastic household ware market decreased by -17.2% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic household ware exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The United States (X tons) was the main destination for plastic household ware exports from China, accounting for a 39% share of total exports. Moreover, plastic household ware exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Japan (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Australia (X tons), with a 3.3% share.

The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 4.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 3.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States totaled +14.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+9.6% per year) and Malaysia (+45.6% per year).

In 2021, purchases abroad of plastics household articles and toilet articles decreased by -29.1% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports showed a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic household ware imports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed perceptible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Japan (X tons), Australia (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) were the main suppliers of plastic household ware imports to China, with a combined 48% share of total imports. These countries were followed by India, Taiwan (Chinese), Thailand, Vietnam, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Italy, the UK, Germany and Bangladesh, which together accounted for a further 43%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +54.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest plastic household ware suppliers to China were Japan ($X), South Korea ($X) and Australia ($X), together accounting for 44% of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese), Thailand, Vietnam, Germany, India, Italy, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, Turkey and Bangladesh lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +46.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average plastic household ware import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 8.9% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, plastic household ware import price increased by +75.1% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average import price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
