Prepared Mustard Market Size in China

The Chinese prepared mustard market reduced slightly to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -2.4% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Prepared mustard consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, prepared mustard production shrank slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 36% against the previous year. Prepared mustard exports from China shrank to X tons in 2021, waning by -13.4% against the previous year. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a tangible increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 104% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, prepared mustard exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild increase. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The United States (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of prepared mustard exports from China, with a combined 38% share of total exports. Poland, Ukraine, Malaysia, Brazil, South Korea, the Netherlands, Russia, Vietnam and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for South Korea (with a CAGR of +186.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for prepared mustard exported from China were the United States ($X), Poland ($X) and Japan ($X), with a combined 43% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Brazil, Vietnam, South Korea, Italy and Russia, which together accounted for a further 27%.

South Korea, with a CAGR of +138.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average prepared mustard export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 69% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a mild decrease. In 2021, approx. X tons of prepared mustard were imported into China; picking up by 36% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports posted strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 55%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, prepared mustard imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +56.5% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest prepared mustard supplier to China, with a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, prepared mustard imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), threefold. Thailand (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States totaled +18.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+10.2% per year) and Thailand (+235.2% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of prepared mustard to China, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States amounted to +13.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+9.8% per year) and Thailand (+164.0% per year).
