The exports peaked at X units in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, primary cell and battery exports declined slightly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 9%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

The United States (X units), Nigeria (X units) and Germany (X units) were the main destinations of primary cell and battery exports from China, together comprising 26% of total exports. India, Russia, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Tanzania, South Korea, Angola, the UK and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +24.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for primary cells and batteries exports from China, comprising 16% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 7.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with a 4.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States stood at +6.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+12.3% per year) and Japan (+4.5% per year).

In 2022, the average primary cell and battery export price amounted to $X per unit, surging by 4.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted a mild expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 272% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to India (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Primary Cells and Batteries
Imports into China
In 2022, the amount of primary cells and batteries imported into China surged to X units, rising by 19% against the previous year's figure. In general, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +114.4% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, primary cell and battery imports stood at $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Japan (X units), Vietnam (X units) and Singapore (X units) were the main suppliers of primary cell and battery imports to China, together accounting for 35% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +54.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest primary cell and battery suppliers to China were Japan ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Singapore ($X), together comprising 68% of total imports. Germany, Vietnam, the United States, Switzerland, the UK, Malaysia and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.
Among the main suppliers, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +48.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average primary cell and battery import price amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -9.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a slight contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per unit), while the price for Vietnam ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+18.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
