For the third year in a row, the Chinese cattle hide and skin market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 1.9% to $X in 2021. South Korea (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the main destinations of cattle hide and skin exports from China, with a combined 95% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Australia, which accounted for a further 3.9%.

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of raw hides and skins of cattle decreased by -5.4% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cattle hide and skin imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a abrupt setback. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cattle hide and skin to China, accounting for a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, cattle hide and skin imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Australia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Argentina (X tons), with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United States was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Australia (-1.6% per year) and Argentina (+120.5% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of raw hides and skins of cattle to China, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Canada, with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from the United States totaled -8.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Australia (-9.5% per year) and Canada (-5.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average cattle hide and skin import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 55% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a deep reduction. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
