In 2022, the Chinese sesame seed market increased by 3.9% to $X, rising for the fifth consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. In value terms, sesame seed production contracted slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Sesame seed production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The average yield of sesame seed in China dropped modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 34%. The sesame seed yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The sesame seed harvested area in China amounted to X ha in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 15%. In 2022, exports of sesame seed from China dropped slightly to X tons, which is down by -4% against 2021 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 20%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sesame seed exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +3.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
South Korea (X tons) was the main destination for sesame seed exports from China, with a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, sesame seed exports to South Korea exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Japan (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 2.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to South Korea totaled +1.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+9.9% per year) and Germany (+61.6% per year).
In value terms, South Korea ($X) remains the key foreign market for sesame seed exports from China, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 1.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to South Korea totaled +3.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+7.7% per year) and Germany (+53.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average sesame seed export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 11% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 27% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Australia ($X per ton) and South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Sesame Seed Imports
Imports into China
After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of sesame seed decreased by -8.7% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 42%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, sesame seed imports rose notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Niger (X tons), Sudan (X tons) and Togo (X tons) were the main suppliers of sesame seed imports to China, with a combined 46% share of total imports. Mozambique, Myanmar, Tanzania, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Mali and Uganda lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 48%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Pakistan (with a CAGR of +92.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest sesame seed suppliers to China were Niger ($X), Sudan ($X) and Mozambique ($X), with a combined 46% share of total imports. Togo, Tanzania, Myanmar, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Mali and Uganda lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 48%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Pakistan, with a CAGR of +96.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average sesame seed import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sesame seed import price increased by +21.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 33% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
