Spinach Market Size in China

In 2022, the Chinese spinach market decreased by -3.4% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, the total consumption indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +21.8% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average spinach yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of spinach production in China reached X ha, remaining stable against the previous year. In 2022, exports of spinach from China expanded remarkably to X tons, picking up by 6.1% compared with the year before. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 26% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, spinach exports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 111% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Malaysia (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons) were the main destinations of spinach exports from China, with a combined 2.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Mongolia (with a CAGR of +96.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the key foreign market for spinach exports from China, comprising 1.2% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 0.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with a 0.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Malaysia amounted to -18.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (-28.9% per year) and Russia (-17.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average spinach export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -1.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 116% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mongolia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+30.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
