Grape Wine Spirits Market Size in China

The Chinese grape wine spirits market stood at $X in 2022, rising by 4.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Grape wine spirits consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, grape wine spirits production expanded markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 48%. Grape wine spirits production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports from China

In 2022, the amount of spirits obtained from distilled grape wine or grape marc exported from China dropped markedly to X litres, declining by -40.1% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, saw a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 190% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X litres. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, grape wine spirits exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a modest increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 122%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Thailand (X litres), Nigeria (X litres) and the United States (X litres) were the main destinations of grape wine spirits exports from China, together accounting for 33% of total exports. South Korea, Singapore, Papua New Guinea, Myanmar, France and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Myanmar (with a CAGR of +69.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), Thailand ($X) and Myanmar ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for grape wine spirits exported from China worldwide, with a combined 11% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Singapore, South Korea, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, France and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 3.2%.

Among the main countries of destination, Singapore, with a CAGR of +58.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average grape wine spirits export price amounted to $X per litre, picking up by 59% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 73% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Myanmar ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Nigeria ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+11.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into China

In 2022, the amount of spirits obtained from distilled grape wine or grape marc imported into China shrank notably to X litres, with a decrease of -21.4% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X litres in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.

In value terms, grape wine spirits imports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw temperate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 70%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, France (X litres) was the main grape wine spirits supplier to China, accounting for a 97% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain (X litres), with a 1.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from France amounted to +2.0%.

In value terms, France ($X) constituted the largest supplier of spirits obtained from distilled grape wine or grape marc to China, comprising 99% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 0.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from France stood at +3.6%.

Import Prices by Country

The average grape wine spirits import price stood at $X per litre in 2022, with an increase of 6.3% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, grape wine spirits import price increased by +42.4% against 2018 indices.
