Unmanufactured Tobacco Market Size in China

The Chinese unmanufactured tobacco market dropped to $X in 2022, waning by -8% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a deep contraction. Unmanufactured tobacco consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Unmanufactured Tobacco Production in China

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the production volume increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of tobacco (unmanufactured) in China dropped slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, which is down by -3.7% compared with the year before. In general, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the average unmanufactured tobacco yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The unmanufactured tobacco harvested area in China rose modestly to X ha in 2022, with an increase of 4% compared with the year before. Overall, the harvested area, however, showed a pronounced slump. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to unmanufactured tobacco production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from China

In 2022, exports of tobacco (unmanufactured) from China rose rapidly to X tons, picking up by 15% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 38%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a mild contraction. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Indonesia (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the main destinations of unmanufactured tobacco exports from China, with a combined 61% share of total exports. Vietnam, the Philippines, Turkey, Greece, Jordan, Russia, France, Egypt and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +31.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for unmanufactured tobacco exported from China were Indonesia ($X), Belgium ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together accounting for 68% of total exports. Vietnam, the Philippines, Jordan, Greece, Turkey, France, Egypt, South Korea and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +26.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average unmanufactured tobacco export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average export price increased by 13%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Greece (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Unmanufactured Tobacco Imports

Imports into China

In 2022, the amount of tobacco (unmanufactured) imported into China totaled X tons, growing by 8.7% against 2021. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 67%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +74.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 50%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Zimbabwe (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) were the main suppliers of unmanufactured tobacco imports to China, with a combined 89% share of total imports. Argentina, Canada, Malawi and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 6.7%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Canada (with a CAGR of +9.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Zimbabwe ($X), Brazil ($X) and Zambia ($X) constituted the largest unmanufactured tobacco suppliers to China, with a combined 86% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Zambia, with a CAGR of +8.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average unmanufactured tobacco import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 7.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Malawi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
