In 2021, the Chinese unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons market increased by 0.6% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports from China

In 2021, the amount of unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons exported from China soared to X tons, jumping by 74% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 74%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced reduction. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Malaysia (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) were the main destinations of unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports from China, with a combined 44% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Oman, India, South Korea, the United States, Indonesia, Spain and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 46%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +335.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), India ($X) and Japan ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons exported from China worldwide, together comprising 45% of total exports. These countries were followed by Oman, Malaysia, South Korea, the United States, Indonesia, Spain and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 39%.

Oman, with a CAGR of +367.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+15.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into China

Unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons imports into China expanded notably to X tons in 2021, surging by 5.6% against the previous year. Overall, imports saw a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 82%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons supplier to China, with a 68% share of total imports. Moreover, unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Qatar (X tons), fivefold. Japan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States amounted to +11.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Qatar (+9.7% per year) and Japan (+2.5% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons to China, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Qatar ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 4.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States stood at +7.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Qatar (+7.5% per year) and Brazil (+161.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 40%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the price for Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (-0.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
