Vegetable Product Market Size in China

The Chinese vegetable product market reached $X in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a slight setback. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, vegetable product production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a mild contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the average yield of vegetable products in China shrank to X tons per ha, falling by -8.5% on the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 18%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha, and then dropped in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of vegetable products were harvested in China; growing by 10% compared with 2021. In general, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The vegetable product harvested area peaked at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

After three years of growth, shipments abroad of vegetable products decreased by -9% to X tons in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +43.7% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 32%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, vegetable product exports expanded to $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +54.7% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 22%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

The United States (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main destinations of vegetable product exports from China, with a combined 28% share of total exports. Vietnam, Mexico, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, the UK, Iran, Spain, South Korea and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +22.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for vegetable product exported from China were the United States ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising 28% of total exports. Export Prices by Country

The average vegetable product export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, vegetable product export price increased by +41.9% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Canada ($X per ton) and the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+6.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Vegetable Product Imports

Imports into China

In 2022, approx. X tons of vegetable products were imported into China; growing by 22% compared with the year before. In general, imports recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, vegetable product imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a strong expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Myanmar (X tons) constituted the largest vegetable product supplier to China, with a 15% share of total imports. Moreover, vegetable product imports from Myanmar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Nigeria (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Vietnam (X tons), with a 1.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Myanmar amounted to +45.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Nigeria (+45.7% per year) and Vietnam (+179.6% per year).

In value terms, Myanmar ($X) constituted the largest supplier of vegetable products to China, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Myanmar totaled +56.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (+15.4% per year) and Nigeria (+86.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average vegetable product import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
