In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Chinese video game console market, when its value increased by 5.5% to $X. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Video game console consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. For the third year in a row, China recorded growth in shipments abroad of video game consoles, which increased by 5.3% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +64.3% against 2019 indices. The United States (X units) was the main destination for video game console exports from China, with a 18% share of total exports. The third position in this ranking was held by the UK (X units), with a 3.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (-3.0% per year) and the UK (+6.5% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for video game consoles exports from China, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States stood at +11.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+21.7% per year) and Japan (+2.9% per year).

In 2022, the average video game console export price amounted to $X per unit, growing by 17% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, overseas purchases of video game consoles decreased by -6.1% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 916%. Imports peaked at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, video game console imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 113% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Vietnam (X units) constituted the largest supplier of video game console to China, accounting for a 23% share of total imports. Moreover, video game console imports from Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X units), more than tenfold. Japan (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 0.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Vietnam stood at +14.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+19.3% per year) and Japan (-23.4% per year).

In value terms, Japan ($X) constituted the largest supplier of video game consoles to China, comprising 21% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Japan stood at +8.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+49.3% per year) and the United States (+39.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average video game console import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 115% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 375%. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
