For the third consecutive year, the Chinese wallpaper market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -10.1% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Wallpaper consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wallpaper production dropped modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports from China
Wallpaper exports from China surged to X tons in 2021, growing by 18% against 2020 figures. In general, exports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 52%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, wallpaper exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +90.3% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 74%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Vietnam (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Iran (X tons) were the main destinations of wallpaper exports from China, together accounting for 34% of total exports. India, the United Arab Emirates, the Philippines, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +51.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the key foreign market for wallpaper and wall coverings exports from China, comprising 19% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 7.7% share of total exports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Vietnam amounted to +36.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Indonesia (+16.0% per year) and the Philippines (+50.2% per year).

The average wallpaper export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 9.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
