In 2021, shipments abroad of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard increased by 5.8% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +50.7% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wrapping papers exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +51.0% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 34%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Brazil (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main destinations of wrapping papers exports from China, together comprising 23% of total exports. South Korea, Colombia, Taiwan (Chinese), Malaysia, Japan, Thailand, Bangladesh, Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia and Cambodia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 47%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Colombia (with a CAGR of +63.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for wrapping papers exported from China were Vietnam ($X), Malaysia ($X) and South Korea ($X), together comprising 24% of total exports. These countries were followed by India, Brazil, Thailand, Japan, Taiwan (Chinese), Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, Colombia and Hong Kong SAR, which together accounted for a further 39%.
Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +53.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average wrapping papers export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Colombia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+8.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Wrapping Papers Imports
Imports into China
In 2021, the amount of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard imported into China expanded modestly to X tons, with an increase of 2.2% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, imports showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, wrapping papers imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +14.9% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Russia (X tons), Canada (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the main suppliers of wrapping papers imports to China, together comprising 41% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +189.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($X), Japan ($X) and Sweden ($X) constituted the largest wrapping papers suppliers to China, together comprising 38% of total imports. The United States, Canada, Taiwan (Chinese), Vietnam, South Korea, France, Malaysia, Indonesia, Finland and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 48%.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +160.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average wrapping papers import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
