In 2021, exports of abrasives (natural) in the CIS skyrocketed to X tons, jumping by 71% on the year before. In general, exports recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 248% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, abrasives exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 121% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Russia was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), generating a 21% share of total exports.
Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +35.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+67.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +67.3% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kazakhstan and Russia increased by +19 and +14 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest abrasives supplier in the CIS, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to +31.1%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 8.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Russia totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (-2.9%).
Abrasives Imports
Imports in CIS
In 2021, the amount of abrasives (natural) imported in the CIS surged to X tons, rising by 28% compared with 2020. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +95.3% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, abrasives imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 62%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Russia dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 80% of total imports in 2021. Kazakhstan (X tons) held a 6.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Uzbekistan (5%). The following importers - Azerbaijan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) - together made up 7.5% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to abrasives imports into Russia stood at +7.8%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+48.6%), Kazakhstan (+13.5%), Belarus (+8.9%) and Azerbaijan (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +48.6% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan increased by +5 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported abrasives (natural) in the CIS, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Azerbaijan, with a 5% share.
In Russia, abrasives imports increased at an average annual rate of +10.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+20.9% per year) and Azerbaijan (-0.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
