Acetone Market Size in CIS

In 2021, the CIS acetone market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a abrupt descent. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 42%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, acetone exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons) was the largest exporter of acetone in the CIS, generating 99.9% of total export.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of acetone. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) also remains the largest acetone supplier in the CIS.

In Russia, acetone exports shrank by an average annual rate of -3.2% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 72% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a perceptible contraction. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Russia.

In 2021, purchases abroad of acetone decreased by -7.5% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, acetone imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 113%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Belarus dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 90% of total imports in 2021. Uzbekistan (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into Belarus decreased at an average annual rate of -5.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+60.1%) and Russia (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +60.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-12.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Azerbaijan (+2.2 p.p.) and Russia (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Uzbekistan (-3.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported acetone in the CIS, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 7% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Belarus totaled -6.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+6.8% per year) and Uzbekistan (-11.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, growing by 42% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 78%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
