Activated Carbon Market Size in CIS

In 2022, the CIS activated carbon market decreased by -4.7% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +79.4% against 2015 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Activated Carbon Production in CIS

In value terms, activated carbon production rose rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -6.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Activated Carbon Exports

Exports in CIS

In 2022, overseas shipments of activated carbon increased by 0.6% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after four years of decline. In general, exports posted a measured increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, activated carbon exports stood at $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +96.8% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 27%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Russia prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 88% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), comprising a 6.8% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to activated carbon exports from Russia stood at +3.9%. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+41.7%) and Belarus (+21.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +41.7% from 2012-2022. While the share of Belarus (+5.3 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+3.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-7.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest activated carbon supplier in the CIS, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with an 8.8% share of total exports.

In Russia, activated carbon exports increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+31.5% per year) and Kazakhstan (+33.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Activated Carbon Imports

Imports in CIS

In 2022, activated carbon imports in the CIS shrank significantly to X tons, falling by -18.7% on the year before. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +13.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 39%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, activated carbon imports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 46% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 71% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Uzbekistan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons). All these countries together held near 24% share of total imports. Belarus (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to activated carbon imports into Russia stood at +1.8%. At the same time, Tajikistan (+21.7%), Uzbekistan (+11.8%), Kazakhstan (+8.7%) and Belarus (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +21.7% from 2012-2022. While the share of Uzbekistan (+5.9 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+4.8 p.p.) and Tajikistan (+4.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-12.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported activated carbon in the CIS, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia totaled +1.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+11.4% per year) and Uzbekistan (+18.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
