Over the period under review, imports showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 129%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, imports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 118% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Kazakhstan represented the major importer of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers in the CIS, with the volume of imports reaching X units, which was near 54% of total imports in 2022. Russia (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Uzbekistan (14%) and Azerbaijan (11%). The following importers - Kyrgyzstan (X units) and Belarus (X units) - each recorded a 5.9% share of total imports.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +28.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+87.1%), Kyrgyzstan (+69.7%), Azerbaijan (+42.4%), Belarus (+13.2%) and Russia (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +87.1% from 2012-2022. Kazakhstan (+29 p.p.), Uzbekistan (+14 p.p.), Azerbaijan (+9.2 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+3.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Belarus and Russia saw its share reduced by -1.7% and -51.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Russia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 76% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +87.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per unit, falling by -21.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 9.1%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per unit), while Kazakhstan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (-0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
