The CIS aluminium foil market rose notably to $X in 2021, surging by 5.5% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X tons of aluminium foil were exported in the CIS; which is down by -14.8% on 2020. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, aluminium foil exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Armenia was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 66% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), generating a 32% share of total exports.

Armenia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the aluminium foil exports, with a CAGR of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021. Russia (-7.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Armenia (+22 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -22.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Armenia ($X) and Russia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021.

Armenia, with a CAGR of +4.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, rising by 27% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Armenia totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+1.5%).

After five years of growth, supplies from abroad of aluminium foil decreased by -0.6% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 16%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, aluminium foil imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a mild slump. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons) was the largest importer of aluminium foil, making up 69% of total imports. Belarus (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Uzbekistan (6.2%). The following importers - Kazakhstan (X tons), Armenia (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) - together made up 8.5% of total imports.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of aluminium foil. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+9.0%), Armenia (+7.9%), Belarus (+5.3%) and Uzbekistan (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +9.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-7.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uzbekistan and Belarus increased by +6.2 and +5.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported aluminium foil in the CIS, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to -2.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (-0.1% per year) and Uzbekistan (+20.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a slight slump. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Uzbekistan ($X per ton) and Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) and Russia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+15.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
