Aluminum Market Size in CIS

In 2021, the CIS aluminum market decreased by -22.7% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, aluminum production rose slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 6.3%. In 2021, overseas shipments of aluminum increased by 36% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, aluminum exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Russia dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 89% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), constituting a 7.8% share of total exports.

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +3.6% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia increased by +6.4 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest aluminum supplier in the CIS, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 9.5% share of total exports.

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 34% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Russia amounted to $X per ton.

In 2021, aluminum imports in the CIS totaled X tons, with an increase of 2.3% against 2020. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -6.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 54%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Belarus (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) represented the largest importers of aluminum in the CIS, together reaching near 56% of total imports. Armenia (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Kazakhstan (X tons) and Russia (X tons). All these countries together took near 43% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +38.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belarus ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Armenia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 71% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Kazakhstan and Russia, which together accounted for a further 27%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +34.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Russia ($X per ton) and Belarus ($X per ton), while Armenia ($X per ton) and Kazakhstan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
