In value terms, ammonium sulphate exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 69%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Russia represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 69% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), generating a 28% share of total exports. Uzbekistan (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -9.5% from 2012 to 2022. Belarus (-1.6%) and Uzbekistan (-15.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belarus (+13 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -14.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest ammonium sulphate supplier in the CIS, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 28% share of total exports.

In Russia, ammonium sulphate exports decreased by an average annual rate of -8.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (-3.4% per year) and Uzbekistan (+3.3% per year).

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -9.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 46%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+22.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of ammonium sulphate decreased by -3.8% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after six years of growth. Overall, imports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 69% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ammonium sulphate imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 53%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Moldova (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) represented the largest importer of ammonium sulphate in the CIS, comprising 86% of total import. It was distantly followed by Azerbaijan (X tons), comprising a 6.7% share of total imports. Tajikistan (X tons) and Russia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Moldova (with a CAGR of +76.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest ammonium sulphate importing markets in the CIS were Moldova ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Belarus ($X), with a combined 84% share of total imports.

Moldova, with a CAGR of +83.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 53% against the previous year. Import price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ammonium sulphate import price increased by +105.5% against 2020 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
