Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 137%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, preserved anchovies imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +55.7% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 98% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. Russia dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 80% of total imports in 2021. Belarus (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Kazakhstan (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 15% share of total imports. The following importers - Moldova (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) - each amounted to a 4.1% share of total imports.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -1.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+56.8%), Azerbaijan (+25.2%), Kazakhstan (+17.7%) and Moldova (+7.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +56.8% from 2012-2021. While the share of Belarus (+9.4 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+4.3 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-16.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported anchovies (prepared or preserved) in the CIS, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 7.7% share.

In Russia, preserved anchovies imports increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+25.1% per year) and Belarus (+42.4% per year).
