Apple Market Size in CIS

The CIS apple market reached $X in 2021, leveling off at the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Apple Production in CIS

In value terms, apple production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Russia (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons) and Moldova (X tons), with a combined 75% share of total production.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 8.1%. The level of harvested area peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, shipments abroad of apples decreased by -0.5% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports, however, showed a modest increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 62%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, apple exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +109.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 40% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Moldova (X tons) was the largest exporter of apples, comprising 58% of total exports. Azerbaijan (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (9.6%). Russia (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Moldova increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Russia (+45.8%), Kazakhstan (+21.2%) and Azerbaijan (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +45.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-1.2%), Belarus (-6.6%) and Kyrgyzstan (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Moldova (+9.4 p.p.), Russia (+4.3 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Kyrgyzstan (-5.9 p.p.) and Belarus (-11.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Moldova ($X) remains the largest apple supplier in the CIS, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Azerbaijan ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Belarus, with an 8.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Moldova totaled +9.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Azerbaijan (+3.4% per year) and Belarus (-10.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Export price indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, apple export price increased by +121.4% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, imports of apples in the CIS shrank slightly to X tons, remaining constant against 2020. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 10% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
