Apricot Market Size in CIS

The CIS apricot market declined slightly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Apricot Production in CIS

In value terms, apricot production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the production volume increased by 26% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Uzbekistan (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of apricot production, comprising approx. 65% of total volume. Moreover, apricot production in Uzbekistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Russia (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Armenia (X tons), with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Uzbekistan amounted to +1.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (+2.9% per year) and Armenia (-1.6% per year).

The average apricot yield amounted to X tons per ha in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the yield increased by 13%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the apricot yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of apricots production in the CIS reached X ha, rising by 3.6% on 2021. Overall, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 7.4% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in CIS

In 2022, overseas shipments of apricots were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 189%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, apricot exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 375%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the four major exporters of apricots, namely Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Uzbekistan and Armenia, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Tajikistan (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons), together committing a 17% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +40.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Armenia ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Moldova ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 69% of total exports. Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +29.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 2% against the previous year. Export price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, apricot export price increased by +8.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 64% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Armenia (+6.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in CIS

In 2022, supplies from abroad of apricots was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, apricot imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 86% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), generating an 8.9% share of total imports. Belarus (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the apricots imports, with a CAGR of -1.6% from 2012 to 2022. Belarus (-2.4%) and Kazakhstan (-13.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+17 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -17.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported apricots in the CIS, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 6.1% share of total imports.

In Russia, apricot imports plunged by an average annual rate of -2.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (-15.2% per year) and Belarus (-0.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 29%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
