The CIS areca nut market expanded sharply to $X in 2022, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a buoyant expansion. In 2022, areca nut exports in the CIS shrank markedly to X kg, falling by -72.7% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 1,471% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, areca nut exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 981% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The shipments of the one major exporters of areca nuts, namely Russia, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of areca nuts, when their volume decreased by -35.7% to X kg. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 381% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X kg in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, areca nut imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 415% against the previous year.
