Aromatic Alcohols Market Size in CIS

After two years of decline, the CIS aromatic alcohols market increased by 3% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -22.2% against 2018 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The total production indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -28.4% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 56%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X tons of aromatic alcohols and their derivatives were exported in the CIS; rising by 6.7% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, saw a dramatic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 141% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, aromatic alcohols exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a sharp slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 97%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Russia dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 91% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), creating a 9.2% share of total exports.

Exports from Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -27.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+66.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +66.2% from 2012-2021. While the share of Belarus (+9.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-9.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest aromatic alcohols supplier in the CIS, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 6.7% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 51% against the previous year. Export price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 119%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus totaled $X per ton.

Imports in CIS

For the third year in a row, the CIS recorded growth in supplies from abroad of aromatic alcohols and their derivatives, which increased by 8.2% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, aromatic alcohols imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Russia prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 96% of total imports in 2021. Belarus (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to aromatic alcohols imports into Russia stood at +11.3%. At the same time, Belarus (+16.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +16.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of Russia (-1.8 p.p.) decreased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

From 2019 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Russia amounted to $X per ton.
