Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +9.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+14.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +14.7% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belarus increased by +4.2 percentage points.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest rolled bitumen articles supplier in the CIS, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of articles of bitumen in rolls was finally on the rise to reach X square meters for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 28%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, rolled bitumen articles imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan was the key importer of articles of bitumen in rolls in the CIS, with the volume of imports resulting at X square meters, which was approx. 54% of total imports in 2021. Azerbaijan (X square meters) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Moldova (9.3%), Armenia (6.4%), Kyrgyzstan (4.7%) and Uzbekistan (4.7%). Belarus (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+48.7%), Armenia (+20.0%), Kyrgyzstan (+5.1%) and Moldova (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +48.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Azerbaijan (-1.2%) and Belarus (-9.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kazakhstan, Armenia and Uzbekistan increased by +5.7, +4.7 and +4.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported articles of bitumen in rolls in the CIS, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Azerbaijan ($X), with a 9.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Moldova, with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan totaled +2.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Azerbaijan (-5.4% per year) and Moldova (+3.1% per year).
