Total exports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +12.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 38%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, steel and iron articles exports declined to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +28.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports by Country
Russia was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 77% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), constituting a 15% share of total exports. The following exporters - Moldova (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) - together made up 6.2% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to steel and iron articles exports from Russia stood at +2.1%. At the same time, Moldova (+13.4%) and Belarus (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +13.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-6.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Belarus (+4 p.p.) and Moldova (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-3.6 p.p.) and Russia (-4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest steel and iron articles supplier in the CIS, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Moldova, with a 3.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+8.8% per year) and Moldova (+10.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 32%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS
In 2022, steel and iron articles imports in the CIS was estimated at X tons, with an increase of 7% on 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, steel and iron articles imports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a tangible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Russia was the main importer of articles of iron or steel in the CIS, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 56% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons), together constituting a 31% share of total imports. Azerbaijan (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to steel and iron articles imports into Russia stood at +1.6%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+19.4%), Tajikistan (+15.0%) and Belarus (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +19.4% from 2012-2022. Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Azerbaijan (-4.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Belarus (+5.4 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+3.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-2.2 p.p.), Azerbaijan (-3.9 p.p.) and Russia (-5.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia amounted to +8.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (-5.8% per year) and Belarus (+0.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -6.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, steel and iron articles import price decreased by -9.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 34%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+8.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
