Cork Article Market Size in CIS

In 2021, the CIS cork article market increased by 9.5% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cork article production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of cork articles decreased by -3.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 70%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cork article exports rose modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 93%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons) represented the largest exporter of cork articles, creating 76% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), comprising a 20% share of total exports. Moldova (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cork articles exports, with a CAGR of +16.0% from 2012 to 2021. Belarus (-12.0%) and Moldova (-17.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+57 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Moldova (-14 p.p.) and Belarus (-40.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest cork article supplier in the CIS, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia amounted to +19.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (-9.3% per year) and Moldova (-18.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 7.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, cork article export price increased by +46.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 62%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X tons of cork articles were imported in the CIS; approximately reflecting the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, showed a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 9.4%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cork article imports reached $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 81% of total imports in 2021. Belarus (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Moldova (X tons). All these countries together took near 12% share of total imports. Armenia (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -9.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Armenia (+5.2%) and Belarus (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Armenia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +5.2% from 2012-2021. Moldova experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-3.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belarus (+3.4 p.p.), Moldova (+3 p.p.) and Armenia (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -10.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cork articles in the CIS, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Moldova ($X), with a 9.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Armenia, with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia amounted to -5.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Moldova (+3.2% per year) and Armenia (-1.8% per year).

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 1.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 17%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
