The CIS articles of peat market fell to $X in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Russia (X tons) represented roughly 99% of total exports in 2022.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the articles of peat exports, with a CAGR of +28.6% from 2012 to 2022. Russia (+46 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) also remains the largest articles of peat supplier in the CIS.

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -7.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 43%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Russia.

Imports in CIS

In 2022, overseas purchases of articles of peat were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, saw a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 49%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, articles of peat imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a perceptible decline. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 54% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons), together generating a 44% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to articles of peat imports into Russia stood at -5.8%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+449.3%) and Kazakhstan (+27.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +449.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Belarus (-12.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kazakhstan (+25 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+10 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Belarus (-15.2 p.p.) and Russia (-21.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest articles of peat importing markets in the CIS were Russia ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Belarus ($X), with a combined 94% share of total imports. Uzbekistan lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 5.3%.

Among the main importing countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +704.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 5.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+46.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
