The CIS artificial and colloidal graphite market fell to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -10.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a pronounced decrease. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +1.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 28% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

For the seventh consecutive year, the CIS recorded growth in shipments abroad of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations, which increased by 58% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 70%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 60%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Russia represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 84% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Azerbaijan (X tons), achieving a 16% share of total exports.

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +14.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+22.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +22.0% from 2012-2021. Azerbaijan (+6.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest artificial and colloidal graphite supplier in the CIS, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Azerbaijan ($X), with an 8.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia totaled +11.6%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -21.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 47%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Azerbaijan amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+7.7%).

Imports in CIS

In 2021, artificial and colloidal graphite imports in the CIS soared to X tons, jumping by 19% compared with 2020. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan was the largest importer of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations in the CIS, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 47% of total imports in 2021. Russia (X tons) took a 28% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (21%). The following importers - Uzbekistan (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) - each recorded a 4.3% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +143.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Russia ($X) and Belarus ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 95% share of total imports. Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 4.5%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +136.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 49% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
