The CIS artificial staple fibre market declined remarkably to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -19.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

Artificial staple fibre exports dropped to X tons in 2021, which is down by -12.3% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 81%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, artificial staple fibre exports fell rapidly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 54%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons) represented the key exporter of artificial staple fibres, creating 90% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X kg), creating a 10% share of total exports.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the artificial staple fibres exports, with a CAGR of +9.1% from 2012 to 2021. Belarus (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia increased by +21 percentage points.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest artificial staple fibre supplier in the CIS, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.

In Russia, artificial staple fibre exports increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -27.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Russia amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+4.6%).

Imports in CIS

In 2021, purchases abroad of artificial staple fibres increased by 51% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 191%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, artificial staple fibre imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 140% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Uzbekistan (X tons) represented the major importer of artificial staple fibres, making up 69% of total imports. Russia (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (13%). Armenia (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to artificial staple fibre imports into Uzbekistan stood at +27.6%. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+67.5%), Armenia (+45.8%) and Belarus (+10.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +67.5% from 2012-2021. Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Uzbekistan (+52 p.p.), Armenia (+2.7 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -14% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest artificial staple fibre importing markets in the CIS were Belarus ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Russia ($X), with a combined 96% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Armenia and Kazakhstan, which together accounted for a further 3.8%.

Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +44.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -20.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw modest growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 110%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+13.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
