In value terms, asbestos exports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Russia was the major exporter of asbestoses in the CIS, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 71% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), mixing up a 29% share of total exports.

Exports from Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -3.4% from 2012 to 2022. Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Kazakhstan (+7.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-7.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest asbestos supplier in the CIS, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 30% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to -5.8%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -1.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 3.6% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Russia totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (-1.2%).

Imports in CIS

In 2022, approx. X tons of asbestoses were imported in the CIS; picking up by 20% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 589% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, asbestos imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 640% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Uzbekistan (X tons) was the largest importer of asbestoses, making up 69% of total imports. Tajikistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Kyrgyzstan (9.7%) and Belarus (5.7%). Kazakhstan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Uzbekistan increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tajikistan (+66.5%), Kazakhstan (+64.2%) and Kyrgyzstan (+7.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +66.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Belarus (-8.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+69 p.p.), Tajikistan (+12 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kyrgyzstan (-15.5 p.p.) and Belarus (-66.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported asbestoses in the CIS, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tajikistan ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 12% share.

In Uzbekistan, asbestos imports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tajikistan (+60.8% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+3.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -18.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 40%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (-0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
