Asparagus Market Size in CIS

The CIS asparagus market contracted rapidly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -17.1% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a mild shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, asparagus production dropped rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the production volume increased by 32%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Armenia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of asparagus production, accounting for 97% of total volume. It was followed by Tajikistan (X kg), with a 2.8% share of total production.

Exports in CIS

In 2022, the amount of asparagus exported in the CIS surged to X tons, rising by 185% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 256%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, asparagus exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 227% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Armenia (X tons) represented the largest exporter of asparagus, constituting 73% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X kg), Russia (X kg) and Kazakhstan (X kg), together generating a 27% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to asparagus exports from Armenia stood at +68.9%. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+79.2%), Russia (+7.4%) and Belarus (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +79.2% from 2012-2022. Armenia (+73 p.p.), Russia (+6.7 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+6.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belarus saw its share reduced by -86.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Armenia ($X) emerged as the largest asparagus supplier in the CIS, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Armenia amounted to +63.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+14.0% per year) and Russia (+7.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -17.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 88%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Armenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+10.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Asparagus Imports

Imports in CIS

Asparagus imports shrank to X tons in 2022, which is down by -14.8% on the previous year. In general, imports recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, asparagus imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

Russia dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 91% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Kazakhstan (X tons), Moldova (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) - together made up 8.5% of total imports.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -3.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Moldova (+17.8%) and Belarus (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +17.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-25.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+26 p.p.) and Moldova (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-30.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported asparagus in the CIS, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 7.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Moldova, with a 4.2% share.

In Russia, asparagus imports increased at an average annual rate of +9.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (-11.0% per year) and Moldova (+19.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, the import price enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 83%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
