In 2022, the CIS asphalt or bitumen article market increased by 4.5% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +96.3% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, asphalt or bitumen article exports shrank to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +76.0% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 28%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Russia was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 88% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), generating a 12% share of total exports.

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Belarus (+11.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +11.8% from 2012-2022. While the share of Belarus (+4.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-4.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest asphalt or bitumen article supplier in the CIS, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia totaled +3.3%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -1.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Russia stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+1.5%).

Imports of Asphalt or Bitumen Articles

Imports in CIS

Asphalt or bitumen article imports contracted slightly to X tons in 2022, approximately mirroring 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a mild downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 12%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, asphalt or bitumen article imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan was the largest importer of asphalt or bitumen articles in the CIS, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 43% of total imports in 2022. Russia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Belarus (13%), Moldova (8.1%), Kyrgyzstan (6%) and Azerbaijan (5.6%). Uzbekistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+21.8%) and Kyrgyzstan (+6.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +21.8% from 2012-2022. Moldova experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belarus (-1.2%), Azerbaijan (-7.2%) and Russia (-10.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Moldova increased by +17, +4.2, +3.4 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported asphalt or bitumen articles in the CIS, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan amounted to +2.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (-12.0% per year) and Belarus (-3.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
