Exports in CIS

In 2022, shipments abroad of bananas and plantains was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports continue to indicate noticeable growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 51%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, banana and plantain exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a mild increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 56%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of bananas and plantains, namely Russia, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bananas and plantains exports, with a CAGR of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) also remains the largest banana and plantain supplier in the CIS.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia stood at +1.7%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -7.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Russia.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Russia amounted to -2.1% per year.

Imports in CIS

For the third year in a row, the CIS recorded growth in supplies from abroad of bananas and plantains, which increased by 2.9% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, banana and plantain imports expanded to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Russia prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 78% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), comprising a 7.1% share of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -4.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+51.6%), Azerbaijan (+12.7%), Kyrgyzstan (+11.3%), Kazakhstan (+6.9%) and Belarus (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +51.6% from 2012-2022. Uzbekistan (+7.1 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+2.6 p.p.), Azerbaijan (+2 p.p.) and Belarus (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -15.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bananas and plantains in the CIS, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 6.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 5.9% share.

In Russia, banana and plantain imports contracted by an average annual rate of -6.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uzbekistan (+43.3% per year) and Belarus (+2.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a slight downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 5.2% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
