Barley Market Size in CIS

The CIS barley market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Barley Production in CIS

In value terms, barley production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Russia (X tons) remains the largest barley producing country in the CIS, accounting for 76% of total volume. Moreover, barley production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Kazakhstan (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Belarus (X tons), with a 4.8% share.

In Russia, barley production increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Kazakhstan (+7.3% per year) and Belarus (-4.4% per year).

The average barley yield expanded slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 4.9% compared with the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 13%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of barley in the CIS stood at X ha, growing by 4.6% on the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 9.5% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the barley harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in CIS

In 2022, the amount of barley exported in the CIS rose sharply to X tons, increasing by 8.5% against the previous year. In general, exports recorded tangible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 78%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, barley exports declined modestly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -13.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Russia (X tons) was the largest exporter of barley, constituting 83% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), comprising a 16% share of total exports.

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+9.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +9.5% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kazakhstan increased by +6.7 percentage points.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest barley supplier in the CIS, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.

Imports in CIS

Barley imports rose sharply to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 12% on 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 102% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, barley imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 190%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Armenia (X tons) represented roughly 88% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tajikistan (X tons), committing a 7.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Armenia (with a CAGR of +40.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belarus ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 71% of total imports. Armenia and Tajikistan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

Armenia, with a CAGR of +38.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 4.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 43%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tajikistan (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
