In 2021, shipments abroad of fish fillets in batter or breadcrumbs was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -14.5% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 49%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, battered fish fillet exports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 70%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Russia was the key exporter of fish fillets in batter or breadcrumbs in the CIS, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 74% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), making up a 24% share of total exports. Armenia (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Armenia (+91.5%) and Belarus (+80.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Armenia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +91.5% from 2012-2021. While the share of Belarus (+24 p.p.) and Armenia (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-25.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest battered fish fillet supplier in the CIS, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia totaled -1.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+75.3% per year) and Armenia (+85.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 7.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (-2.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, purchases abroad of fish fillets in batter or breadcrumbs decreased by -23.4% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports faced a sharp descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 14%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, battered fish fillet imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 25%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Belarus (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented the key importers of fish fillets in batter or breadcrumbs in the CIS, together finishing at approx. 73% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Moldova (4.7%). The following importers - Uzbekistan (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Armenia (X tons) - each reached a 6.1% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +20.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, the largest battered fish fillet importing markets in the CIS were Russia ($X), Belarus ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X), together accounting for 92% of total imports. Moldova, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 6.9%.
Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +23.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 2.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 17%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+7.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
