Beef Market Size in CIS

In 2021, the CIS beef market decreased by -3.2% to $X, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, consumption recorded a slight decrease. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Beef Production in CIS

In value terms, beef production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Russia (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons), with a combined 78% share of total production. These countries were followed by Belarus, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan, which together accounted for a further 20%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tajikistan (with a CAGR of +24.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average beef yield reached X kg per head in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 4%. The level of yield peaked at X kg per head in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure.

The global number of animals slaughtered for beef production amounted to X heads in 2021, standing approx. at 2020. This number increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 7.2%. The level of producing animals peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Exports in CIS

In 2021, exports of beef (cattle meat) in the CIS skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 17% on 2020 figures. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +25.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, beef exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +82.4% against 2015 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Belarus represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 78% of total exports. Russia (X tons) took a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kazakhstan (6%).

Exports from Belarus increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Russia (+51.5%) and Kazakhstan (+39.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +51.5% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia and Kazakhstan increased by +15 and +5.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the largest beef supplier in the CIS, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Belarus totaled +1.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (+54.4% per year) and Kazakhstan (+40.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

For the fourth year in a row, the CIS recorded decline in purchases abroad of beef (cattle meat), which decreased by -14.3% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports showed a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 0.3%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 79% of total imports in 2021. Uzbekistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 8.6% share, followed by Kazakhstan (5.2%). Belarus (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons) and Armenia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to beef imports into Russia stood at -11.7%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+304.1%), Belarus (+16.5%) and Azerbaijan (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +304.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-4.0%) and Armenia (-6.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uzbekistan (+8.6 p.p.), Belarus (+2.4 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -15.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, growing by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Armenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
