In 2021, the CIS preserved beef market increased by 8.9% to $X, rising for the fifth consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, consumption saw a strong expansion. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Preserved Beef Production in CIS
In value terms, preserved beef production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 59%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Preserved Beef Exports
Exports in CIS
After two years of growth, shipments abroad of beef and veal (salted, in brine, dried or smoked) decreased by -25.9% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 4,291% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, preserved beef exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 1,581% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Belarus dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 90% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Azerbaijan (X tons), creating a 6.2% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
Belarus was also the fastest-growing in terms of the beef and veal (salted, in brine, dried or smoked) exports, with a CAGR of +19.0% from 2012 to 2021. Azerbaijan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Kazakhstan (-47.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Azerbaijan (+6.2 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belarus saw its share reduced by -7.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the largest preserved beef supplier in the CIS, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Azerbaijan ($X), with a 3.8% share of total exports.
In Belarus, preserved beef exports expanded at an average annual rate of +10.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Azerbaijan (0.0% per year) and Kazakhstan (-42.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+10.2%).
Preserved Beef Imports
Imports in CIS
In 2021, purchases abroad of beef and veal (salted, in brine, dried or smoked) decreased by -71.9% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 117% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, preserved beef imports declined rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 110% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Kazakhstan represented the largest importer of beef and veal (salted, in brine, dried or smoked) in the CIS, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 46% of total imports in 2021. Azerbaijan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 23% share, followed by Russia (21%) and Moldova (6.5%). Belarus (X kg) took a minor share of total imports.
Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the beef and veal (salted, in brine, dried or smoked) imports, with a CAGR of +30.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Moldova (+29.0%), Belarus (+25.5%) and Azerbaijan (+21.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Russia (-1.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Moldova increased by +34, +11 and +4.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Azerbaijan ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Russia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 77% of total imports. These countries were followed by Moldova and Belarus, which together accounted for a further 19%.
Belarus, with a CAGR of +25.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt downturn. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (-0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
