In 2022, Azerbaijan (X tons) was the largest exporter of bentonite, committing 84% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), making up a 10% share of total exports. Armenia (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 115% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bentonite imports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 64% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

Russia (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) represented roughly 76% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tajikistan (X tons) and Moldova (X tons), together achieving an 18% share of total imports. Azerbaijan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Tajikistan (with a CAGR of +102.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest bentonite importing markets in the CIS were Kazakhstan ($X), Belarus ($X) and Russia ($X), with a combined 74% share of total imports. Azerbaijan, Tajikistan and Moldova lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

Among the main importing countries, Tajikistan, with a CAGR of +73.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 23% against the previous year. Import price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, bentonite import price increased by +54.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
