In 2022, the average yield of blueberries and cranberries in the CIS rose remarkably to X tons per ha, picking up by 7.3% against the year before. In general, the yield, however, saw a abrupt descent. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Exports in CIS

In 2022, the amount of blueberries and cranberries exported in the CIS surged to X tons, growing by 17% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 119%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, blueberry and cranberry exports rose notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 118% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Belarus prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 89% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), generating an 8.2% share of total exports. Azerbaijan (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Belarus increased at an average annual rate of +13.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+62.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +62.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Russia (-7.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belarus (+31 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -33.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the largest blueberry and cranberry supplier in the CIS, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 6.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Belarus stood at +13.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (-9.4% per year) and Azerbaijan (+69.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -7.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in CIS

After six years of growth, supplies from abroad of blueberries and cranberries decreased by -9.2% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 66% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, blueberry and cranberry imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 90%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 82% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), creating a 12% share of total imports. Moldova (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to blueberry and cranberry imports into Russia stood at +23.2%. At the same time, Moldova (+109.5%) and Belarus (+29.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +109.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Belarus (+3.7 p.p.) and Moldova (+3.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-8.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported blueberries and cranberries in the CIS, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with an 8% share of total imports.

In Russia, blueberry and cranberry imports expanded at an average annual rate of +23.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+34.3% per year) and Moldova (+76.3% per year).
