Bottled Water Market Size in CIS

The CIS bottled water market reduced modestly to $X in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

In value terms, bottled water production dropped modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 17%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In 2022, approx. X tons of bottled waters were exported in the CIS; shrinking by -21.2% against 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 79%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, bottled water exports amounted to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +110.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 45% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Russia was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 70% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons) and Armenia (X tons), together comprising a 25% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +13.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+18.5%), Armenia (+6.0%) and Belarus (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +18.5% from 2012-2022. Russia (+18 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Armenia and Belarus saw its share reduced by -6.6% and -12.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest bottled water supplying countries in the CIS were Russia ($X), Armenia ($X) and Belarus ($X), together accounting for 96% of total exports. These countries were followed by Kazakhstan, which accounted for a further 2.2%.

Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +15.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Armenia (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, the amount of bottled waters imported in the CIS dropped to X tons, which is down by -6.4% against 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, bottled water imports fell to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +65.3% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 63%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Russia (X tons) was the largest importer of bottled waters, comprising 49% of total imports. Belarus (X tons) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Moldova (14%) and Kazakhstan (11%). Azerbaijan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+53.8%), Belarus (+16.7%), Moldova (+13.9%), Kazakhstan (+6.1%) and Azerbaijan (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +53.8% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Belarus, Moldova and Uzbekistan increased by +9.2, +4.4 and +2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bottled waters in the CIS, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to +6.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+9.9% per year) and Kazakhstan (+3.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the import price showed a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 7.5% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (-0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
